"Is it true that aloin hurts and is toxic to the body ?
In this regard I would like to respond to you by quoting a famous aphorism by Joseph Goebbels:
Repeat a lie a hundred, a thousand, a million times and it will become a truth .
Even without validating scientific evidence, if we are told over and over again that something is true, it is easy for us to end up believing it.
And that's exactly what happened with the aloin !
What the aloin is toxic, is nothing but a story for purely commercial purposes, set up and repeated endlessly by a well-known American company that produces and markets products based on Aloe Vera.
In reality it is not absolutely true that aloin is toxic, there is no scientific evidence to prove it.
Instead, there are several studies showing that aloin is a potent antitumor and natural antimicrobial.
What is true, however, is that some people may be particularly sensitive to this substance, whose intake, at least at the beginning, can lead to some side effects such as diarrhea.
So, at least initially, if you have these problems, you should start with an intake at reduced doses of Aloe juice, but do not eliminate aloin altogether.
Finally there are cases, which we will then see, in which the aloin is completely contraindicated .
Aloin is a yellowish and viscous substance with a pungent odor and bitter taste, present in the peel and in the outer layer of gel of Aloe leaves.
We find it both in Aloe Vera, in Aloe Arborescens, but also in many other varieties of Aloe.
It is a molecule that is part of the group of anthraquinones , substances that act as a "defense mechanism for plants" against the attack of insects and various parasites.
And in fact these substances have important antimicrobial properties, useful for the defenses of the plant itself, but that can also be exploited by us humans.
The main molecules that are part of the group of anthraquinones, contained in the Aloe, are:
All these substances, incredibly useful for our body, are eliminated by many producers of Aloe juices, with the excuse that they are toxic substances.
But the truth is another ...
There are two main reasons:
Commercially these characteristics are unpleasant by consumers and this is a problem for those companies whose sole objective is to sell and generate profit.
And this is the real reason that pushed these companies to use only Aloe gel and not the whole leaf.
And very often these companies, in order to improve the taste of their products, add other ingredients such as sugar, sweeteners, flavorings and fruit juices of low quality, ending up with the alteration of the organoleptic properties of the final product, to the detriment of the benefits .
It is true, the aloin has laxative properties .
In fact, the pharmaceutical industry uses it for the preparation of powders and tablets with a laxative effect.
These drugs , if used excessively and continuously , can irritate the walls of the intestine and the long-term effects can also be dangerous .
However, we are talking about an extracted and isolated molecule, not of the Aloe leaf taken in its entirety , where the aloin represents only a very small part.
However, because of the laxative properties of the aloe, the companies and retailers of products based on Aloe Vera gel have thought well to catch the ball, starting to tell the story that the aloin would be even toxic to the body.
All with the sole objective of dissuading you from using your Aloe plants, in favor of their products , based on the "pure gel" deprived of alkali, often using conventional techniques, such as the use of activated carbon filters. and pasteurization, procedures that improve storage times, but which destroy most of the active ingredients of Aloe, drastically reducing the benefits.
The truth is that aloin can be harmful if:
With the words "pure Aloe gel, without aloin", these companies delude you, making you believe that they are offering you a product with a high "added value".
The truth is that these products, in 100% of cases, are far lower than the juice that you could easily make at home , with your Aloe plants, grown in pots or in the garden.
Take a preparation made with the whole leaf allows you to benefit from the whole set of active ingredients present in the Aloe and not only from the gel.
And it is no coincidence that Father Romano Zago (the greatest supporter of the beneficial properties of the Aloe), in his two books " Di Cancro can be cured " and " Aloe is not a medicine ... but it heals ", strongly advises the preparation juice, using the entire Aloe leaf, preferably using the Aloe Arborescens variety.
In fact, Aloe Arborescens contains up to three times the active ingredients present in Aloe Vera.
In this short piece of video, Father Zago answers precisely the question " Can aloe be toxic? Is aloin toxic? ".
The concepts I will explain to you now apply to Aloe, as they apply to any other medicinal plant.
To answer the question I will rely on the text " Phytosanitary: Rational Use of Plant Drugs " written by Prof. Francesco Capasso, Prof. Giuliano Grandolini, Prof. Angelo A. Izzo, three of the leading experts in phytotherapy in Italy.
Excerpt from the chapter: The complexity of the natural drug
The goodness of a plant drug * is directly related to its content in active ingredients .
* NB : the word "drug plant" is used to indicate a plant or part of it, stored in the dry state, and used for therapeutic use.
In the drug, however, there are many other substances that give it a particular therapeutic physiognomy difficult to reproduce in the laboratory .
These are inactive substances, or of minimal pharmacological interest such as bitter or aromatic substances which, exalting the secretions of the gastrointestinal tract, facilitate the dissolution and absorption of the active ingredients.
Reporting it to our case means that in the Aloe there are many substances that are inactive, or of minimal pharmacological interest are fundamental.
In particular, the aloin (bitter substance), in addition to the antitumor and antimicrobial properties, has a fundamental action that is to enhance the secretions of the gastrointestinal tract to promote the absorption of other active ingredients .
Excerpt from the chapter: The complexity of the natural drug
It has been established that more than the active substance of a drug is effective the "pool" of pharmacologically active substances present in the drug because between it and the other components are established useful synergisms towards the medicinal effects and / or antagonisms to the side effects, both they are harmful (toxic) or simply unwanted.
Always reporting it to our case, more than the active ingredient taken individually is important to the alliance of pharmacologically active substances present in the Aloe , as they are able to interact with each other usefully.
In fact, some substances taken singly can be toxic, in association with others, they become useful and medicative.
The leaf of the Aloe, in its entirety, represents a synergistic complex of active principles to which particular actions and applications, difficult to replace and reproduce, compete.
It is obvious that any attempt to purify the raw extract will change the behavior of the finished product.
More clearly, Aloe has a set of active ingredients that interact with each other, which have specific actions and applications that are difficult to replace and reproduce.
It is obvious that any attempt to purify the raw extract, such as removing aloin, sterilize or pasteurize the Aloe, does nothing but de-stress the effects of the finished product .

If you have the chance, time and desire, making fresh juice at home is always the best choice.
However there are cases where this is not possible, or is even contraindicated.
For example, for people who live in particularly busy and polluted cities .
It is in fact known that Aloe is a plant that tends to absorb smog, smoke, radiation and pollutants.
In these cases, using it to produce juice, it could even be counterproductive, because you would end up taking many toxic substances to your body, substances that the plant has absorbed directly from the environment in which you live.
In other cases there could be a climate problem .
Aloe Arborescens tolerates heat and drought very well, on the contrary it is badly predisposed to the harsh climates of winter. So if you live in the mountains, or in northern Italy, you may not be able to grow Aloe.
So how to do it?
For all these people who are unable to grow Aloe and self-produce the juice, the Erbedimauro farm cultivates and produces fresh Aloe juices to order .
We do not stock, the juice is made just before shipping, shipping that takes place in 24, maximum 48h.
On this page you will find the entire catalog of juices produced by our company.

There are cases in which it is better to avoid aloin and other anthraquinone compounds.
Since these are substances with a laxative action , they can cause irritation in those intestines already irritated due to an inflammatory disease.
So if you are suffering from diseases such as colitis, diverticulitis , or worse from ulcerative colitis , or Crohn's disease , it is better to avoid taking drinks or products containing aloin.
In this regard, our farm produces two varieties of products, one based on Aloe Arborescens and the other based on Aloe Vera, without peel and without aloin. Both are organic, natural and without preservatives.

Fascinated by the many beneficial and healing properties of these plants and after having used them for a long time, today, with the help of my family, I cultivate with passion Aloe Arborescens, Aloe Vera and many other aromatic and medicinal plants. My philosophy is simple, it is to offer the highest quality of raw materials and to use exclusively artisan processes to produce my products. Rules seemingly simple, which serve to get the most out of my plants and my products.
