The term cardamom indicates two different spices, which should not be confused, however:

  • The green cardamom (or true cardamom) is obtained from the Elettaria cardamomum, a tropical plant of the Zingiberaceae family, widespread in Sri Lanka, India and Malaysia. Its seeds have an intense and very aromatic taste, above all thanks to the generous content of essential oils Essential oil (limonene, alcohols, esters and eucalyptol).
  • Black cardamom, on the other hand, is the spice extracted from Ammonum subulatum, much more common and less prized than green cardamom and therefore used as its substitute. Its flavor tends to be bitter and very reminiscent of mint.

Properties of cardamom

Cardamom, in addition to being a spice, is also an excellent natural remedy for preventing and treating various diseases and for this reason it is highly appreciated in China and India in their traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines.

These are its main healing properties:

  • Aperitifs and digestives : cardamom seeds chewed or taken as a decoction before the meal stimulate the appetite, while taken after they promote digestion. In particular they are excellent for improving the digestion of animal proteins, as they stimulate the secretion of gastric juices.
  • Against halitosis : due to its intense taste and aroma, cardamom seeds can be an excellent expedient to remove bad breath due to poor digestion, or to the consumption of particular foods, such as garlic, onions and cheeses.
  • Anti-nausea and anti-vomit : together with ginger, cardamom is the most used spice in the East to combat these unpleasant symptoms. Just chew 1 or 2 cardamom seeds to soothe the feeling of nausea and vomiting.
  • Abdominal swelling : green cardamom has carminative properties and like fennel seeds can be an excellent ally to prevent and combat problems such as flatulence and meteorism.
  • Sore gums and toothache : One or more rinses with the warm decoction of cardamom seeds can be very effective in alleviating pain due to toothache or gingivitis.
  • Cough, cold and sore throat : in Ayurveda medicine, cardamom is also used to treat the symptoms of the most common flu symptoms, such as coughs, sore throats and colds. In this regard, it is suggested to drink 2 or more cups of decoction prepared with cardamom seeds a day.

How to prepare the decoction

To fully enjoy the properties of cardamom you need to prepare a decoction . Here are the instructions to prepare it:

  • You need a cup of water (about 250ml) and 3-4 cardamom seeds contained within a pod. In order for the seeds to release all their properties, it is advisable to crush them before use.
  • Pour the water into a saucepan and then add the seeds, then heat to the stove until the water reaches the boiling point. At this point, let it simmer for about 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it rest for another 5 minutes. During this operation it is advisable to keep the saucepan well covered to prevent all essential oils from evaporating.
  • Filter the drink and drink it hot.

Use in the kitchen

Cardamom is still little known in our country, while it is widely used in the East and also in the countries of Northern Europe. Thanks to its strong and spicy aroma and slightly spicy and fruity flavor, cardamom is used to flavor many oriental first courses, meat and especially desserts, such as cakes, creams and ice creams .

In Arab countries it is also used to flavor black tea and coffee . In Arabia, qahwa is prepared with cardamom. This very aromatic coffee is very easy to make: just add 2-3 cardamom seeds to the ground coffee. Once ready, it can be served as is or by adding cream and a little sugar. According to the Arabs this aromatic coffee is great for refreshing the blood!

Another really good recipe to make is cardamom ice cream . It can be prepared at home by infusing the cardamom seeds in milk for a few hours, which you will then use as a base for ice cream. Suggested combinations are cardamom with pistachio, coffee, and orange. If you are intolerant to milk you can obviously use soy milk.

Finally, here is a simple, simple trick to flavor your sweets with cardamom seeds: just crush them and mix them with sugar. Once done you can use this " cardamom flavored sugar " to prepare any dessert to your liking (cakes, biscuits, tarts, etc.). Obviously you will have to be good at adjusting with the dosages, I would start with the seeds contained in a pod for 100g of sugar.


Cardamom seeds are generally well tolerated and have few contraindications. The only warning is for those who present calculations of the gallbladder , where the consumption of cardamom could stimulate their motility with consequent abdominal or even colic pain. The use of cardamom is not recommended for those who take antiplatelet drugs .
