What is it useful for?

Peppermint is perhaps one of the best essential oils to treat pain. Particularly in rheumatic pains and in the patterns due to beatings and bruises, but also migraines and to relieve the itching due to the bites of mosquitoes or other insects.

Used internally, peppermint essential oil is considered one of the best essential oils for those with digestive problems (dyspepsia, meteorism, flatulence, colitis and almost all disorders related to the digestive system) and is an excellent anti-nausea and anti-vomit.

It has a tonic and "refreshing" action for the mind, as it clears the thoughts, promotes concentration and improves memory. For this reason, mint essential oil is often used with a vaporizer, to improve the performance of the students, especially if under scrutiny, or by those who do a job which needs concentration.

The mint essential oil has antiseptic, antimicrobial and antipyretic properties (lowers fever). That’s why it is very useful for purifying the room and preventing possible contagious flu and applied to the skin, promoting the lowering of fever and a natural cure of colds.

These are the main applications of mint essential oil:

  • For memory and concentration: a few drops to add to the air diffuser to vaporize the essential oil in the home/work environment;
  • Cold: add a drop of essential oil to a tissue and breathe in it from time to time, vaporize the essential oil in the room using a diffuser; massage the forehead and sides of the paranasal nose (not pure, but 1 drop diluted in a tablespoon of vegetable oil);
  • Influence: to prevent flu though the vaporization of essential oil whit an air diffuser, massage the plants of the feet with a tablespoon of vegetable oil to which was added 1-2 drops of peppermint essential oil. It will help reduce fever.
  • Nausea and vomiting: a few drops added to the air diffuser to vaporize the essential oil in the home / work environment and for internal use;
  • Difficult digestion: for internal use, add a drop of essential oil to a teaspoon of honey and take it 15-20 minutes before meals;
  • Abdominal colitis, colitis: for internal use and applied externally diluted in a vegetable oil, for massages on the abdomen.
  • Rheumatic and muscular pains: massage on the painful area (not pure, but 1 drop diluted in a tablespoon of vegetable oil);
  • Menstrual pain: massage on the abdomen (not pure, but diluted), and for internal use;
  • Headache: a few drops added to the diffuser to vaporize the essential oil in the home / work environment; additionally massage on the forehead above the paranasal sinuses and on the temples (not pure, but 1 drop diluted in a tablespoon of vegetable oil);
  • Insect bites: massage on the affected area (not pure, but 1 drop diluted in a tablespoon of vegetable oil, or calendula oil);
  • Intestinal worms: for internal use.

Use Advice

1. Applications on the skin through massages

The peppermint essential oil cannot be used pure on the skin, it must be diluted with a fatty substance, such as vegetable oils (olive oil, sunflower oil, almonds, etc.), or with macerated oils, or creams.

Mixed with vegetable oil (or with a cream) the recommended dilution is:

  • for children: 4 drops of essential oil for a tablespoon of vegetable oil/cream;
  • for adults: 6 drops of essential oil for a tablespoon of vegetable oil/cream.

2. Internal use (ingestion)

The peppermint essential oil from Erbe di Mauro is certified for food use, so it can also be ingested. However, we recommend taking it carefully because, despite being a natural product, it contains very complex and very concentrated substances, so an excessive dosage could be toxic.

In this regard, before use, we recommend that you ask for advice to a professional (doctor/herbalist /naturopath).

I also remind that essential oils should never be used pure. You can add a drop to a lump of sugar, or a teaspoon of honey, or in water, or in fruit juices. Dosages should never exceed 2-3 drops at a time.

NB: Essential oils for internal use can interfere with many drugs. In this case, always consult an expert before ingestion.

3. Other applications

  • Air diffusion in the environment: from 6 to 10 drops to be added to the water in air diffuser/vaporizer for the environment, or in the pan of the radiator to purify the air, promote breathing and fight unpleasant odors.
  • Inhalation with the handkerchief: add a drop of essential oil to a handkerchief. Breathe in several times during the day.
  • Hot baths: add a tablespoon of baking soda * (or vegetable oil, or milk) to the hot water of the bath, to which 10 drops of essential oil have been added. For a more effective action, after the bath it is advisable to dry well, without rinsing.
  • Footbath: soak your feet (up to the ankles) in a container full of warm water to which a teaspoon of baking soda * (or vegetable oil, or milk), mixed with 4-6 drops of essential oil has been added. Soak for about 15-20 minutes.
  • In the washing machine: add 10-15 drops (depending on the intensity of the desired perfume) directly in the bowl, mixed with detergent, or with a bit of bicarbonate. It helps for a good cleaning of the fabrics giving the clothes a pleasant clean smell.

* Essential oils are not soluble in water; while bicarbonate, or alternatively fatty substances (such as vegetable oils, or milk) have indeed the purpose of making them soluble in water.

Expiration

Expiry: after 5 years, if stored well in the dark, away from sources of heat.

Contraindications

Peppermint essential oil is contraindicated to pregnant and breastfeeding women, to children under 3, to those allergic to mint and to people suffering from epilepsy.

Applied pure on the skin it can irritate and a prolonged use can bring a widespread sense of cold, which can then lead to hypothermia.

Warnings

Never use pure on the skin or on the mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. For internal use, do not take the peppermint essential oil together with the homeopathic treatments, because it prevents absorption.

All essential oils naturally contain potentially allergenic molecules such as cinnamaldehyde, citronellol, eugenol, citrus, coumarin, limonene, linalool, geraniol, etc. which can, therefore, trigger allergic reactions. For this reason, we recommend testing them before use, applying 1 drop dissolved in 30 ml of olive oil (or other vegetable oil) on the skin of the forearm and wait 48 hours for the possible occurrence of allergies.
