Description
Moringa oleifera is a tree of the Moringaceae family, native to eastern India, widespread and cultivated in a large part of the tropical belt of the planet. The Moringa tree can reach up to 7 m in height, but with deep and fertile soil it can even exceed 10 m
One of the peculiarities of Moringa moringa is that it is resistant to drought and can develop in a wide variety of soils, even poor ones, and on sterile soil, even if on fertile and moderately irrigated soils it can have a remarkable growth. It has no soil preferences as regards pH (acidic or alkaline soils), tolerating pH values from 4.5 to 9.0; it develops and can bear fruit already in the first year of planting with abundant growth of leaves. However, Moringa is sensitive to frost and does not tolerate flooded or asphyxiated soils.
Moringa powder ( Moringa oleifera ) is made from the ground leaves of the Moringa tree, a plant native to northern India that has been used in Ayurveda medicine for thousands of years.
In India and in some African countries, where this plant is widely spread and cultivated, the Moringa has been renamed with the name of " tree of life ", most probably due to its nutritional characteristics.
In fact, Moringa doesn't throw anything away! Every part of the tree can be used in cooking, or for herbal purposes.
Nutritional profile
Thanks to its high nutritional content, Moringa is highly sought after. In Africa, people usually dry the leaves and grind them. The resulting powder is used as a spice to be added to rice and legumes, in order to make the meal nutritionally complete.
In fact, Moringa boasts a high protein content (between 27 and 30%), amino acids (20, of which all essential ones), vitamins (Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B6 and vitamin K), mineral salts (especially calcium, iron, manganese, phosphorus and potassium) and fibres. It is also extremely rich in chlorophyll .
Taste
Moringa leaves have a slightly spicy taste, in some ways similar to the common radish. This makes them appetizing both eaten raw in salads and cooked, in stews, side dishes, or soups.
Warnings
To be kept in a dry place, away from heat sources. Keep out of reach of children.
