Description

Cinnamon is made from the bark of Cinnamomum verum, an evergreen tree of the Lauraceae family that grows in far Sri Lanka. Cinnamon looks like small cylindrical hazelnut-colored sticks, with a characteristic aroma and a slightly sweet and spicy taste. Cinnamon sticks can then be ground and powdered to make it easier to use in the kitchen.

Cinnamon properties

Cinnamon is famous above all for its hypoglycemic properties, meaning it is able to lower blood sugar (glycaemia). For this reason it is recommended in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes.

It is a spice that is friendly to women, because it helps to relieve menstrual pain and to regularize the cycle.

It has anti-inflammatory abilities indicated above all as a natural remedy for the treatment of stomatitis (inflammation from the oral cavity) and gingivitis. It is no coincidence that cinnamon is an ingredient found in many mouthwashes.

The ability to stimulate cognitive abilities is also recognized, as it improves memory and reduces the risk of incurring degenerative diseases such as senile dementia, or Alzheimer's.

Purposes

In the Western tradition, cinnamon is used mainly to flavor fruit, especially apples, in chocolate, candy and pralines, as an aroma in creams, in whipped cream, in meringue, in ice cream and in many liqueurs. Eastern tradition also uses it in savory, to accompany smoked and non-smoked meats. Both love it as a tea flavoring, herbal tea, milk and chocolate.

Contraindications

Cinnamon, if consumed in moderation (maximum 3 g per day), has no particular contraindications. Otherwise, there is a risk of allergic outbreaks and mucosal irritations.
