Cordyceps sinensis is a mushroom that grows and develops exclusively in the mountains of Tibet, between 3,000 and 5,000 m in height. The cordyceps is a parasitic ascomycete, or a fugue that multiplies by parasitizing insects through spores. When the insect dies, the mushroom grows directly from the carcass of the "deceased".
It is a very rare mushroom and sought after by the emperors of ancient China. In fact, Traditional Chinese Medicine attributes to him the ability to reinvigorate the body, improving both physical and sexual performance .
It is no coincidence that Tibetan shepherds were the first to discover the exceptional properties of Cordyceps furoni, more than 2 thousand years ago, when they noticed that their Yaks (Tibetan ox), eating this strange mushroom, became strangely much more vital and sexually active .
Intrigued, the shepherds tried to collect these mushrooms and feed on them, obtaining the same invigorating effects that they had noticed in their animals. They also noted a lower difficulty in breathing, very common in those hills and a greater resistance to diseases in general.
The therapeutic properties of this mushroom have been jealously guarded by Chinese doctors for centuries. Cordyceps first started talking only in 1993, shortly after the conclusion of the Chinese national swimming games, in Beijing. On that occasion three world records were broken in the 1500, 3000 and 10000 meters.
The physical structure of the swimmers and their amazing performances fueled suspicions about a probable use of prohibited anabolic substances, but doping tests denied this hypothesis. Only later, coach Ma Junren attributed the results of the athletes to his particular training protocols, and to a cure with a mix of Chinese herbs, including cordyceps.
One of its strengths is its ability to increase energy and physical and mental endurance . Because of this, it is highly sought after by athletes, but also by people in situations of strong work and / or family stress.
Cordyceps also has the ability to enhance both male and female sexuality. In this context, modern research has confirmed the millennial reputation that traditional Chinese medicine has assigned to Cordyceps in restoring and strengthening sexual function.
Traditional Chinese Medicine suggests its intake for its stimulating action on the immune system and for the health of two organs in particular: the lungs and kidneys .
Here are some of the main properties attributed by Traditional Chinese Medicine and by official Medicine to Cordyceps sinensis.
Like Ganoderma Lucidum, Cordyceps sinensis is also able to improve our body's resistance to physical and / or mental stress situations .
As shown by the scientific literature , Cordyceps sinensis is a mushroom rich in polysaccharides (mainly β-glucans) which act by modulating the functioning of the immune system . Cordyceps does not act directly on the pathology, but rather stimulates the immune response which becomes faster and more effective in responding to the attack of pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi, etc.).
Cordyceps sinensis is one of the most sought after natural products by athletes . This is because it has proven useful in promoting tissue oxygenation, through relaxation of the bronchial, bronchiolar and vessel wall muscles; increase in blood flow to the muscle and heart, the most effective use of oxygen by the body (increase in VO2max).
For centuries, Cordiceps Sinensis has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and in Eastern cultures to treat problems of the sexual sphere, both male and female , such as the drop in libido, impotence and infertility and, as regards men increases sperm count and survival.
A recent study has shown that actually taking Cordyceps can also affect sexual activity, increasing the total number of spermatozoa, the percentage of motile spermatozoa and serum testosterone.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the organs that most of all go to benefit from the therapeutic action of Cordyceps sinensis are the kidneys. Even today in China, Cordyceps is regularly used in the treatment of kidney diseases, including chronic nephritis, chronic pyelonephritis, renal dysfunction or failure, and nephritic syndrome.
In a recent study, it has been seen how taking Cordyceps affects the reduction of the main indicators of renal failure, namely creatinine and proteinuria.
In Chinese medicine, Cordyceps is an officially recognized treatment for cardiac arrhythmias, as it has the ability to regulate the beat. It is an excellent cardiotonic, with which interesting benefits can be obtained in heart disease: extrasystoles, tachycardia, arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation. Interesting human studies show that it is very useful for the prevention and treatment of heart attacks. The results obtained by the scientists have shown improvements in the ECG, greater energy, vitality and well-being in general. It is also able to keep cerebral ischemia and stroke away.
Over time, numerous studies have done nothing but confirm the innumerable beneficial properties of Cordyceps sinensis. Here are the main benefits also confirmed by the scientific literature and published on the famous medical portal Pubmed.
From 2 to 6 teaspoons a day of Cordyceps sinensis powder, mixed with water, or in a yogurt, in a single solution, or by chopping the intake during various times of the day. For better assimilation it is advisable to add lemon juice, which contains vitamin C. Since cordyceps is a highly digestible product, it can be taken on an empty stomach, or after meals.
By combining Vitamin C, the active ingredients present in mushrooms are absorbed in the intestine more completely. Thus increases the effectiveness of the product.
It is possible to mix two or more mushrooms, or combine them with other herbs with a similar effect.
Traditional Chinese Medicine mentions Cordyceps sinensis among the "superior herbs", that is, among those natural products that have no contraindications.
From the numerous experiments carried out even with high dosages of Cordyceps in laboratory animals, it has not led to the finding of toxic manifestations . In rare cases, mild gastric disturbance has been described.
As for the lactation and pregnancy phases, as there are still no studies certifying safety, it is advisable to avoid the use of Cordyceps, or in any case consult your doctor first.
Finally, the intake is contraindicated to those who take immunosuppressants or to people who have undergone an organ transplant .
