Description

Auricularia auricula-judae is one of the first mushrooms cultivated by man, starting in the 7th century AD, during the Tang dynasty, as reported by Li Shih-Chen in his treatise Pen Tsao Kang Mu.

The popular name "Judas ear" derives from the legend that says that the mushroom took this shape because of the curse of the tree on which Judas Iscariot hanged himself, overwhelmed by guilt for having betrayed Jesus.

It is a mushroom of the Auriculariaceae family, which grows spontaneously and is cultivated on tree trunks.

It has a reddish-brown color, a gelatinous and elastic consistency, with a shape similar to an ear.

In Chinese Medicine it is used above all for the treatment of cardiovascular problems and intestinal disorders, as it is rich in mucilage with a soothing effect and regulator of bacterial flora and intestinal activity.

Auricularia is a humectant on all mucous membranes, and is widely used in Chinese Medicine in cases of poor lacrimation and salivation, but also in dry cough and sore throat.
